Finally got my hands on a copy of Wall and Piece. I found this quote:

Art is like no other culture because its success is not made by its audience. The public fill concert halls and cinemas every day, we read novels by the million and buy records by the billions. We the people, affect the making and the quality of most of our culture, but not our art.

The Art we look at is made by only a select few. A small group create, promote, purchase, exhibit and decide the success of Art. Only a few hundred people in the world have any real say. When you go to an Art gallery you are simply a tourist looking at the trophy cabinet of a few millionaires.

I think is says enough on its own.

We have a book of all the original illustrations from the 1851 edition of The Iconographic Encyclopedia of Science, Literature and Art which we page through fairly regularly. You may have noticed I've started using a lot of the images in my work. While looking through it one day, we came across a illustration of a beached whale... that looked oddly happy for being in such predicament. So for weeks following, my fiance kept suggesting I use it in something.. along with astrolabes and "baby volcano" (I leave you to decipher that one on your own).

So today when he came home from work, I surprised him with this:
